One of my favorite John Piper books is “Don’t Waste Your Life”, so I am excited to hear this message from him about this topic. Thanks for the updates.

Piper’s strong love for the Bible not only extends to the original text or the translation he reads most often, but also for the many different translations.  In “Desiring God,” he not only translated verses himself, but he used ESV, KJV, and NASB.  I love that he chose to highlight the translating part of the process as part of loving God’s Word, especially when he talked about the 150 different ways to say “Yours Truly.” God is so huge, so incomprehensible that not even the original inspired manuscripts can capture His essence.  To communicate the Word in english, Tyndale took special care to use the language of the day to project God’s message, and not his own.  In the same way, we should cherish the Word that much so we project God, and not our own petty paraphrasing.  The ESV is a great translation, but there is always another way to say “For God so loved the world,” even in English. 

We should translate how we speak the Word, but not what the Word says.  Language can communicate God or it can communicate sin.  I pray that we always communicate God.
