Watson on humility

Okay, so Thomas Watson loves lists. Here’s another list our friend wrote down about what a humble person is (and a list I think we need in our Christian world right now).

Watson made a great point in his Book Godly Mans Picture when he says, “Many make a show of humility to achieve their own ends."I think this is a brilliant insight into the heart of man. We can even take Godly things like pursuing humility and we can do it for very selfish proud reasons. So the question is: Why do you pursue humility?

I want to help you answer that question by sharing two of Watson’s thoughts about what a humble person looks like.

1.  A humble soul is emptied of all swelling thoughts of himself.

2.  A humble soul thinks of others than of himself.

“A humble person values others at a higher rate than himself because he can see his own corruption and thinks surely it is not so with others.”

“A humble Christian studies his own infirmities and another’s excellencies and that makes him put a higher value upon others than himself.”

Excellent section - I’m currently reading that section and just love what he writes in his ninth point - “A proud man complains that he has no more; a humble man wonders that he has so much.” Highly commend that section!
